The History Behind the Popular Culture Figure of Dracula

Dracula, a famous vampire novel by Irish writer Bram Stoker, has never ceased to captivate the imagination as well as trigger the fears of many generations. Did you know that the novel wasn’t published in Romania, the country where it is set, until 1990? Bram Stoker actually got inspired to write this novel because he read the story of Vlad Tepes, or Vlad the Impaler, a Romanian prince. The story in itself is still inspiring new games, stories and online casino slots. Speaking of casinos - Did you know online gambling in Pennsylvania just became legal in the summer of 2019?

A Brutal Prince

Vlad the Impaler was famous for the brutal practices he used against his enemies. His favorite torture method would be impalement. He would penetrate the victim's body with a wooden stake and leave him to die a painful but slow death. When the Ottomans invaded his country in 1462, he reportedly killed over twenty thousand people using this method. He died in 1476 during a battle against the Hungarian forces.
